If you want to begin to grasp the grouping task in a reality world take a look at this site:

There are many layers and as complete as this site seems there is still more to it. I hesitate to say anything about this process is easy given the fact that it takes a good AE 3 days to group a 24 hour day into something they pass on to the editors. I was completely unaware of how much goes into this part of the work flow that is often taken for granted. And on top of all the tedium there are preferences for each show as to how long the final groups should be and the Zen part of where to put add edits so as to minimize the various cameras shifting their position on the 4 way and 9 way grid when various sources don't exist at a certain time code.
