I have to disagree that Avid's software is balky, fragmented and non-intuitive. Website? Yes.
I still find the software to be very elegant in many ways. Some things need MAJOR help (hello, color correction, and effects). But as an editing app, it's very strong. The more jobs I do on FCP, the more I realize how much I like Avid.
I'm not big on the new smarttools, but Avid has been designed from the beginning so that multiple styles of editors and multiple styles of projects can find something useful in it. There are all kinds of pieces of the software that I rarely, if ever, use, but those may be the same pieces that YOU find critical. So if Avid adds something that you don't like, as long as there's a relatively painless way to turn it off or ignore it, then it's not a big deal. I didn't like some of the smarttools stuff either, but once there was a software release that allowed me to turn most of it off, then I respect the fact that Avid is trying to open up their UI to people who like to edit with a different style. That's good for the company, as long as I'm not forced to change a style that I like.
