$400 sounds reasonable to me. Updating software on modern decks is pretty common. I have one fairly old deck and updating the software on it cured at least one problem that I'd been experiencing. Sometimes it adds new functionality. Sometimes it improves a codec or error checking or something. Sometimes the software that runs the deck has a bug in it that's just like a bug in any other software. Updating the firmware solves it or masks it.
