Which is why I wrote this a bit up the thread:
...there are four basic "Zoom" methodologies in FCP:
Zoom In / Out
Zoom In / Out on Zoom Tool
Zoom In / Out on Timeline
Zoom In / Out on Playhead in Timeline.
Each one does something different and/or has a preferred result, and
each method is mappable.

The method you're using (that first one listed) can indeed be
frustrating under many circumstances, which is why those others
exist. I use #4 quite a bit - I have it mapped to Option +/- at the
moment.
