Re: [Avid-L2] list of Avid stuff you miss in FCP-Now OT history

I think we're talking apples and oranges here. I can't fault MC for not foreseeing tapeless formats. But I can fault FCP for not understanding the basic requirements of editorial work. Prescience would not have been necessary for Apple to avoid some of the more bonehead things FCP did in its early days, like changing the TC of a subclip to time of day code, or happily interpolating code during capture whenever there was a break, rendering the numbers associated with many of your master clips complete fiction. It wouldn't have taken prescience to make subclips trimmable, or to have their name changes update everywhere.
I know quite well that these issues have been fixed, but in a company more concerned about getting work done, they would never have seen the light of day. The issue here is not whether companies can foresee the unforeseeable - of course they can't. What they can do is make some basic effort to understand what editors need. Avid did this; Apple just didn't.

I accept the non tape source point.

I think I was trying to say that 2 decades of video editing

(1968-1988) threw up a lot of questions that got answered in the

linear world.

The moment I saw AVR25, I knew that MC would go online, and all the

grading, DVE, keying,

Titling, and Video Fx that we took for granted in a digibeta suite,

would have to be matched in NLE's.

Some may say we are still waiting for the RT power of a $1m dollar

suite, but we only want to spend $3k on it . . . .
