In the case of what goes on here, our client (pro sports broadcast) would like to create an XDCAM disc image or a specific folder here at home, and ftp that to the crew that's on the road with the deck. I know that can be a big file, and I'm not advocating it, but it does hold up work getting done when the deck isn't in town. The team eventually bought another deck. Still sounds like a dongle to me. Hardware being required to export a file.

Actually, think if it as the same thing as doing a digital cut to a VTR - only in a file mode. To do an "XDCAM export" means that it has to be written to an XDCAM disc in a manner that the deck can play it as video.
