Re: [Avid-L2] OT: FCP and color levels

Hi Job,

I don't know a way around it. I have two files exported as QuickTime files from MC soft. One was exported RGB, the other 601/709. The 601/709 file looks washes out in the quicktime viewer. They both look the same when imported into FCP. Both files display the same information in the Quicktime 10 movie inspector. Same for the QuickTime 7 player. Somehow, FCP imports both to the same color space. There is no color space information displayed in the movie inspector. If color space meta-data is in the exported file, it is not displayed. The inspector did display the codec as Avid DNxHD.

Best Wishes,

Paul Sulsky

I suppose if you have an Avid, you could import it as 601/709 and export it as RGB.

Subject: [Avid-L2] OT: FCP and color levels

I know, OT here, but I don't subscribe to the FCP-L.

Student of mine got a QT file back from color correction. File has color
levels at legal 709, 16-235 measured in 8-bit.

If we drag/import the file into FCP, it seems to lift the blacks and lower
the whites. Ergo, it seems to treat any QT import as having 0-255 levels.

Is there any way around that in FCP?

On another system, with a BlackMagicDesign card installed, we found that the
HDSDI output sends out legal levels (16-235 measured in 8-bit), but the HDMI
output seems to have the levels expanded to 0-255. And we see no way to
correct that (on the Nitris DX system, there is an HDMI color space setting,
and MC-Soft also lets you choose luma expansion on or off for FullScreen
display mode).

Any ideas, or is this just one of those clumsy things we'll need to work
around somehow?

Thx,
