Here is what I heard back. This is great support just like the hey day with the likes of Grass Valley. Thanks for the thorough explanation.
From Avid Customer Support:
Hey John Chris ran this to ground and here is what he found out from QA. 1) The SFNT Germany is partially covered by this KB here: https://avid.secure.force.com/pkb/articles/en_US/Troubleshooting/MC-dongle-not-recognize-on-macOS-Catalina-10-15-5?retURL=%2Fpkb%2Fapex%2FKB_Render_FAQ%3Fid%3DkA0400000004Dgs%26lang%3Dja_2_1_1_1_2_2_2_2_2_1_1__16&popup=true 2) The intermittent behavior is probably caused by how Link caches things... or at least how it used to in older versions of the Link application. So if it gets experienced again, going into Link's Preferences and clearing the cache should fix it or upgrading to the latest Link. 3) There are often issues with dongle and perp licenses when users perform a do-it-yourself cloning of the main internal drive, especially when using Mac's Migration Assistant. 4) Cloning a drive does indeed change the Device ID. Now... dongles don't have anything to do with Device IDs, nor do the perpetual licenses housed on the dongle. So in theory, it always "should" work ;) Marianna for Chris. Marianna.
