Re: [Avid-L2] Betacam to Kona LHi issues

We are dealing with analog signals as I best recall.

It's been a while but does MC need a reference for the deck and the breakout box? Like a BB Generator for reference? Not all Beta decks had full TBC's as I recall. The BVW's did but not the cheapie low end decks as i can best remember. I also remember needing to feed BVW-70's and 75's  and most decks BB to make the TBC settle down for playback.

I had a Kona LHi card when I worked for Edison. It was a FCP7 suite but it was only used as an output card for my monitor.

If you are getting B&W then you are getting only the Y channel and not getting R-Y/B-Y. Or something is out of sync with something else. Are all components set for 525i 29.97 and not 525p by mistake.

I'm dusting off some serious memory bins to recall all this stuff.

Sorry, I have plenty of people call digital betacam "beta" in context. This is a professional forum and we are not in his headspace. This needs to be defined properly in this context. I was confused as to which format/deck he was referring to.  If the incoming vision is appearing B/W on the live monitor in AMC but recording OK then there is a reference issue. The OP said that was their next step, and I would agree.

Why do people keep asking this question? Isn't it clear the OP has a Beta deck, not a Digi Beta deck?

I think the problem is also not being addressed at all. Color captures show up monochrome inside MC? Nothing about component, composite, or whatever could explain that. What codec is this being captured to? Try another codec, or try another version of MC. This sounds like a software bug or a codec issue.

All of those tbh.

That doesn't make me: a rich person. (I'm not)

Anyway: why digitize a BetaSP off an BetaSP-deck? Older and current digiBeta should be able to read and output via SDI.

Why fiddling around with component off a Beta deck?

Just asking. No offense.

Folks!

Why would you utilize a Beta-Deck for digitizing?

Take the easy way: go digi

" AJA also passes the component out via SDI to a monitor."  Does this mean you are feeding component into the LHi card?  The fact that it's black and white really sounds like the card is only seeing the Y of the Y, R-Y, B-Y component signals.

What I was trying to say is that the SDI input into the AJA works correctly.  AJA also passes the component out via SDI to a monitor.

How is the Betacam deck connected?  There is no SDI on a betacam.  Are you feeding component into the LHi?.  If it's component it sounds like the card is only getting the Y of the Y, R-Y, B-Y signals.  There is also betacam component vs. regular component if memory serves me.  That had more to do with levels IIRC.  Perhaps there are settings in the aja control panel or the cabling is incorrect.  I would think you could feed the LHi straight composite by setting the control panel.  I haven't been on an aja box/card in a while.  If I had to guess I'd say the card was being fed composite but the control panel was set up for component of some sort.

Any AJA users out there?

Customer is running a recent  version of Media Composer 2018.14 on a new Dell Precision 7920 tower with AJA Kona LHi.

Works fine with SDI.

When connected to a Betacam deck it does the following:

- SD 525i ingest displays in Avid as black and white (although the underlying file is in color and exports correctly)

- 1080i upconvert was the workaround before, now it displays a mishmash of video garbage

SDI feeds of both to a monitor (from the Kona BOB) look fine.

I am bringing in a reference generator and a standalone component to SDI converter to troubleshoot but curious if anyone has seen/solved before.
