As a freelance editor, you are ethically bound by an expectation of business confidentiality with your clients. All of them. You agreed to work for Company A and they have a reasonable expectation of privacy. Unless Company A's behavior is so unethical or illegal as to rise to the level of a breach of faith, then you have no right (much less any obligation) to share their secrets. Luring a client from another company is not unethical.
Reverse the question. Did Company A pick your brain about Company B's relationship with the client they want to steal? Would you give them this information? No, because that would be unethical.
Both companies have a reasonable expectation of business confidentiality. If I were Company B and you reported this to me, my faith in your discretion would be damaged. As a practical matter, you could damage your relationship with both companies by divulging this information.
Cheers,

The companies, their relationship to each other, your relationship with each, how the market is there, how many other companies are around there, etc.
One question to ask yourself (and you do not need to tell me or the group here), has Company B ever done something like this to another company? Like to Company C? Do these companies woo clients in secret regularly but this time it's two companies you know? Will this hurt your relationship with either company? By saying anything or not saying anything?Do you think it's fair that Company A has involved you in this and put you in the middle? Are they respecting your position in the community at all?Ultimately how to handle this is your choice regardless of what anyone here has to say. And you will need to own that decision.Sorry I can't be of more help and tell you what to do.Jay
