Here is a section of a pdf on the new Avid product line up FAQs:
Q:
Can I still buy a Media Composer perpetual license or will I need to transition
to a subscription?
A:
Yes, we will continue to offer Media Composer perpetual licenses, as well as 1-Year Software
Updates + Support Plan renewals (previously known as
Annual Upgrade and
Support Plan
renewals). This software provides all of the same collaborative workflows
of Media Composer |
Ultimate, but does not include the software add
-
ons. If you'd
rather convert your Media Composer
perpetual license to a Media Comp
oser | Ultimate
subscription license, we offer options to do this
too
So if I continue my normal annual subscription I in essence lose the symphony dongle's ability to run symphony. I have two dongles with symphony built in and a symphony software activation license. This sounds like if I continue to renew them I lose the ability to have symphony color correction unless I pay an additional fee. This is less than a year after Avid offered the symphony option as a one time 99 dollar charge. I assume that if I run older Avid versions the symphony will still work as it has but as soon as I venture into 2018.4 I have to pay extra to use symphony option.
I saw a posting mentioning shapes in the color corrector with tracking. Does anyone have further information regarding this? If there are serious improvements in the color corrector then I could see paying some more but if it's just lip stick on a pig well that won't fly. Hey did I just say a pig won't fly?
I'm going to stay open minded about this new stuff but it does seem funny that for years people kept saying having media composer and symphony was just too confusing to follow so the big news a few years back was everything is named media compose or media composer with symphony. That was supposed to simplify the product line. Seems like we've gone back in the other direction. Media Composer First, Media Composer Subscription, Media Composer Perpetual, Media Composer Perpetual with add ons, Media Composer Ultimate Subscription only. But if you have a perpetual dongle you can continue with Media Composer and add on symphony for a fee.
Given how easy it is to export 10 bit out of Avid this is all making sense to me!!! ;-0
