Home system MacPro mid 2012 12 Core 2.66GHz OS 10.12.5 Avid 8.9.4.
I have always had somewhat unstable startups on this computer. For the most part it's fine but occasionally it will kernel panic with the screen of text popping up and then it auto restarts. Sometimes this happens multiple times. I've just learned to live with it. I'm sure there just some odd tidbit floating around but a clean install isn't in my plans.
When I recently upgraded the OS to Sierra I noticed that my startups were very stable. Then I upgraded Avid from 8.5.3 to 8.6.4 and then the kernel panic startups began again. Then after about a week it got real stable again. When I have the issue some times I will hold option and choose the startup disk but still I might get the kernel panics. After then after 8.6.4 seemed stable on startup I upgraded to 8.9.4 about two weeks ago and again the kernel panics kicked in. Once again going through the option choose startup made no noticeable difference. Then after about a week and a half it's stable startup again.
I'm curious if anyone has any idea what the computer is doing in this situation? Is there some sort of learning curve. I'm booting off a Pcie SSD drive but I've had similar experience on spinning drives. I tried zapping the Pram but no change. Any thoughts I'm just curious.
