In the beginning you had to have the Avid hardware.
And the market said, "we can all make hardware", and there was unrest.
Then Avid said, okay, "we can make cheaper external hardware." (That won't actually work well)
And the market said, "we can do it better and cheaper for your competition."
And Avid said (in a panic) "Okay, we will use other's hardware." and there was mayhem.
And the almighty Grant said, "I can make it cheaper than anyone, and it will be good enough."
And Avid said, "We give up, let's buy Grant's hardware, slap our name on it, and charge more for it."
And all was peaceful, even as the folks waited for renders of things that used to be done in real time on Avid hardware.
