I use an application called Tidy Up! to track down dupe media.

It has sometimes been a curiosity to me and occasionally it has seemed to be important in some of my work. It's hard to know exactly what goes on sometimes but occasionally when I've had multiple sources of the same media it seems sometimes Avid decides to link to the "other" media file and as a result I see my Safe Color Limit Effect become unrendered at that section. I could be incorrect about what causes that behavior but I've seen it every so often and have always thought something like multiple source media files was the culprit.
One issue I have had that I can repeat is when I have an ama'd clip that I transcode to say DNX_175X and use it in a sequence. Then down the line if the original source ama file is still available in the same file location Avid decides to link to the ama'd clip instead of the transcoded media of that clip. I get the generic why of why this happens but it's annoying. I usually see it when I go to export a QT Ref and Avid tells me it can't export QT Ref with ama'd Media. Then I have to force a relink to the transcoded version of the clip. This is one case where I find it advantageous to do a traditional import rather than an ama transcode even if the ama transcode is faster.
So how Avid scans and picks duplicate media isn't a deal breaker but it can be a head scratchier and it would be nice to understand the basic approach Avid takes under the hood. Drive letter/number makes sense but I don't know how the translates in a Mac environment.
Once again the more I learn the less I know. ;-)

And that would be alphabetical. Some tests are easily done, as this is all pure speculation. But then again, why is it important?
