Just finished the process for Sierra.
When you download it, the installer does automatically launch. But it
stops at a splash screen waiting for you to press a button to continue.
At that point, simply choose "Quit" from the menu (or cmd-q). The
installer will be in your Applications folder. Move it for safekeeping
to where ever you like. Double click it when ever you want to actually
do the install.
