Avid Artist control is the audio board right? I googled that just to make sure. Given you said it became slow and unusable I started to confuse it with the Artist Color panel that has never been usable in any practical manner in Avid while it works fine in other apps. So now even the flying fader boards aren't sensitive or precise enough to use with latter Avid versions. That is very disappointing.
While the dB suffers the exec bonuses seem to be going to "11". ;-(

In my experience, it differs based on which bugs will cripple your workflow the most. Regular audio file->Imports don't work for me on 8.5, but on 8.6 everything seems slow and the Avid Artist control devices become completely unusable. 8.6 also does not open all bins created in v7, whereas 8.5 opens them fine.
I'm now running multiple different versions on my systems so I can workaround. But for pure stability, I would still choose v7. Sad, but true.
