Re: [Avid-L2] OT: Firefox Browser crashing on several different systems recently?

Hello John,

Don't use Firefox myself, and have a very specific strategy behind why I usually use Chrome with Safari as a fallback.  Chrome has built in code for Flash.  You can run any website in Chrome without having to have Flash installed at all on your computer.  Other browsers on Mac require a system level install of Flash to accommodate websites with it.  I have heard it is more secure as well, but I don't know for sure if that is true.

By using Chrome (with auto update) I get the best of both worlds, with the flash vulnerabilities updating quickly in an integrated system.  Having said that, there was a time about a year ago when Chrome caused me memory issues as well.  That's when I did some investigating and started running chrome with auto-update.

Another area that can have a large impact on AVID systems is whether you have GPU/hardware acceleration on in your browser.  It's a setting usually buried in some esoteric part of the browser, but it can have a large impact on the quality of your browsing, memory and other apps.

And finally, back in the day when I managed an in-house facility at Warner Bros. I didn't allow browsers or e-mail programs at all on working AVID systems.  it is a great philosophy to avoid issues.  I would set up basic computers in the edit bays for e-mail and browsing, and keep a share on the network for when you needed to download or upload something to or from the AVID.

Good Luck!

Hi,

I'm having the same problems with Firefox and keep getting unresponsive script errors and flash crashes - both macs Yosemite on one, El Capitan on the other.  The Comcast home page and Yahoo are the worst offenders.  I'm certain it's all the little video ads they are inserting.  The script errors reference an ad web address.  I haven't had many problems streaming on a Netflix tab in Firefox.  Netflix uses Streamlight.  The one problem I have occasionally is that it seems either Comcast or Netflix is lowering my video quality on the second or third episode of something I'm watching.

That's interesting you mentioned a few months ago.  That's probably about the same time I started having typing lags and just this afternoon I left it running idle and again it crashed leaving me with the crash reporter running.  I did find Safari ran without issue all day today.

I wonder what has changed in firefox to make it sluggish and so unstable.  Having seen this behavior on 3 different mac systems combined with your recent experience and choice seems to validate my experience as not tied to a particular computer issue.  Has Firefox always been a memory hog?  I can't say I've noticed that but I never really monitored it.  I have noticed on my 2009 MBP running 10.6.8 that with my normal startup page with about 10 tabs I can see the computer heat up even when I'm not browsing on any page and when I start scrolling around FB or browsing the CPU temp kicks way up.

Did you determine Firefox was a memory hog by checking out Activity Monitor ram usage?

I ditched Firefox as well, only a few months ago. It was my browser of
choice, until some changes made it sluggish and memory hog. Chrome is much
better, and I only use Firefox when I need a browser to load a 32-bit
plugin like the Aspera Connect browser plugin.
