[Avid-L2] Re: Resolve 12.5

At this moment in time, Resolve is not an editorial powerhouse.  However, there are a substantial number of very important, and very thoughtfully-implemented features in Resolve -- that Media Composer will never support.

The breadth of new editorial features alone that were introduced in Version 12.5 is staggering, especially when one considers that Blackmagic is principally a hardware company, and Resolve was principally a dedicated color application.  To gain a better understanding of those features, I suggest this video by the author of the Resolve operating manual:

Clearly, there are plenty of larger, more complex or collaborative projects that would be better-managed on Media Composer.  But there are plenty of projects that would benefit from being cut and finished in Resolve.  And of course, the differences become even more blurred if you have OFX versions of the more popular effects packages that you used on Media Composer.

Blackmagic and Avid are two very different companies, with different priorities, different dev budgets, different management styles and different corporate will.  For better or worse, Media Composer has been largely locked in a time warp for over 16 years, as evidenced by years of repeated complaints on this forum.  That does not make Media Composer a fundamentally bad core editing platform -- but it is clearly not evolving in a meaningful way.  Blackmagic, on the other hand, could not be more different in that respect, and the next release or two will likely establish Resolve as a formidable editing application in its own right.

Personally, I would not be teaching Media Composer to students who want to be gainfully employed in the editorial field, unless they have specifically targeted a segment of the industry that uses that application.  Go to the post production section of any job-related website and you'll see 30-40 jobs requiring expertise in a non-Media Composer application -- for every Media Composer-based job.  Of course, you likely won't see any jobs stipulating that the project must be edited on Resolve either.

However, Resolve is a professional caliber application, widely-deployed as a standard in the industry, and is actively-developed by a well-run and highly-motivated company that is known for disrupting markets.  And let's not forget that it is available in a free version.  Frankly, from my point-of-view, its just a matter of time before it gains a more substantial toehold in the editorial industry.
