Re: [Avid-L2] Arri Alexa and or Amira "Upscaling" for True 4K not acceptable for Netflix?

AFAIK Netflix only requires 4K on their "original content" deals.

I asked the YouTube and Netflix tech guys specifically about me uprezzing to 4K for delivery to them. The YouTube guy said "I guess you would be incentivized to do that, Hmmm." The Netflix guy saw that also and then said that they could look and see if there was no info above a certain MHz (it was technical beyond my total comprehension) to which I replied that I could just add the title pass in 4K and he was like "Hmmmm...."

Short answer is this 4K scam is all BS as they have to get it down to your house around 10 mbps range. The longer answer is that the big guys, folks like Disney, have figured out that a 4K origination, 1080 or 2K finish, then the TV uprezzing back to 4K is indistinguishable to the viewer from a pure 4K pipeline.

I know Netflix insists on 4K, but this is silly. Those guys truly are idiots if that's their official position. I presume that means they won't accept any major blockbuster film shot with ALEXAs, like "Skyfall", "Birdman", etc.

ALEXA 65mm camera would be true 4K, but these are rental-only. So they'd rather have something shot with a Sony FS7 to a highly compressed codec, rather than a better camera like an ALEXA with some slight in-camera up-conversion - generally recorded to high-quality ProRes or ARRIRAW.
