I'm quite certain the transfer speeds cannot be compared to those big players. Also, the S3 approach is clearly not point-to-point -- although dealing with global entities such as Amazon, Google (and other international CDNs) means more points-of-presence and potentially fewer Internet hops.
My own file transmission needs are not so time-sensitive that I can't wait for a slower upload. And the ones that are time-sensitive are frequently better solved with FedEx -- especially for massive data sets. And then there's the total cost of the solutions from those big players, which is clearly justified, but not necessarily supported by the budget.

There are a number of good S3 browsers, but you might consider buying two instances of CloudBerry S3 Explorer Pro ($39.99 USD each) for Japan and Australia, and syncing them to the same Amazon S3 account. Then either party can upload files that the other party can access. You and your team could also then take advantage of Amazon Glacier for ultra cheap long-term, offline backup.Amazon S3 Storage Rates: http://goo.gl/10aP9L
