Greg-- I assume you've rebuilt permissions, zapped the PRAM and all the other "routine" maintenance chores. This is a shot in the dark, but I read a couple of days ago that Safari is causing some havoc with users worldwide, regardless of OS X version and Mac model number/age. Speculation is that it could be Apple-server related, and Apple has remained moot to this point (are they stumped?) But it does affect people's systems crashing. So maybe unplug from the net and/or delete Safari for the time being...
I only play the role of Mac Expert in the movies, so take this advice accordingly.
