Mr. Dennis,
All kidding aside what procedures does NBC and the Today show use for long term archiving of material?  If you need to pull video from a Today show piece from a year or more ago where do you go and how is that media accessible?  Back in the tape day it would be a trip to the ABC vault for me but I never worked in the vault so I don't know how long things were kept around.  What's the day in day out archive scheme at a major network like?

I answer:

We have Archivists whose job is to organize our material for storage off-site.  Everything is saved as files now; cut stories, teases, b-rolls, entire programs (both textless and 'dirty' versions).  Long ago, edited sequences were saved to tape after each show from the Playback devices (Playback Operators would make these tapes).  Now, Archivists retreive the sequences from the system and send them to the 'near-line' storage in New Jersey over data lines.  The remote site consists of robotic LTO systems that hold many data tape cartridges, available for quick location and data retrieval.  If producers need something not already on the on-line system, they make requests to the Archivists for the material.  The Archivists search the 'near-line' database, and then restore the material back onto the on-line system.  As I understand it, the transfer rate from and to 'near-line' is about 5 times longer than a clip's playback time (IOW, it would take about 5 minutes to transfer a 1 minute long clip).  It should be noted that in the previous DNxHD145 period, this transfer time was 3 times longer.  So our change to XDCAM50 has cut our restore time by 2/3s.

John also asked:

Okay I can't help myself here.  I hope NBC realizes how many bits they are putting out of work with their stingy data ways.  Downtown LA is filled with millions of homeless bits living in cardboard drive boxes.  I hope NBC is happy.

I reply:

I think they can live with themselves over this travesty . . . .
