[Avid-L2] Re: Beating the Dead QT Gamma Shift Horse

That matches my recent experience.  Even with QT Ref into AME I had to switch to RGB.  To me given it's a QT Ref linked to what is 601/709 Avid media there is some metadata voodoo that make AME rescale to full range under the hood to make proper level .movs.

This brings me back to a question I've asked before and don't recall if there was a definite answer.  When I export a QT Ref from DNX media and use QT Pro to make ProResHQ self contained I end up with a ProResHQ QT that when ama'd back into Avid shows proper video levels.  Does this mean the ProResHQ video essence is still 16-235 like the Avid DNX media or does QT Pro Scale up to RGB level in the process of making a self contained .mov?  I don't get gamma shifts etc... with this workflow but I have never nailed down if ProRes media should be RGB or 601/709 as a default.  I assume both are allowable in the format but the behavior of AME makes me think most of the world expects ProRes to be RGB level.

John,

I'm afraid I haven't done too many Avid exports for a long time. But from what I recall the last time I did this, I had to set it as RGB in order for the levels to appear right in FCP and/or Premiere.

Mr. Oliver,
I have found in order to use AME for a ProRes from a same as source DNX export I have to check the RGB level box but I think I was going Prores out of Avid. What level do you use when exporting DNX same as source.  I would think it should be 601/709 normally for DNX but like I said if I didn't check RGB I cam out with low levels like AME wanted full range and just treated the video as if it was when in fact it was 16-235.
