It depends on if you plan to roundtrip back and forth, I believe. But I think you are in for good news.
Unlike PremierePro (or FCP-X not playing nice with FCP-7), Avid has kept in mind their very first user starting their first project, (and the importance of archiving and legacy access), so 'backward' version compatibility has been a feature.
But also, just as important, when they do a 'dot' update on older version software, they often build-in a 'forward' compatibility to open sequences from the latest version software for those who have not or can not upgrade.
Some of our editors worked from home on very old Mac Pros running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 (or even older Leopard or later Lion 10.7 Mac OS-X), with Media Composer ver 5.5. At that time, a couple of our dozen editors using 5.5.2 could not open sequences that had been touched/modified in MC 7 (7.0.2, I believe).
When Avid updated to 7.0.4, they also kept in mind users who were stuck with the last 32-bit version of MC, and gave away 5.5.5. Suddenly, 5.5 could open any ver 7 bin or project. Some specific features only in ver 6, 7, or 8 would of course not be available, but the editors had no problems in the roundtrips of media, sequences and most effects between those versions, which were still running the solid Snow Leopard OS.
So in your case, I would believe there would be no problem being on the same version MC but having Yosemite/Snow Leopard roundtrips. My editors have no issues with version 7 Avid MC on different Mavericks (10.9.5) and Snow Leopard workstations.
My PremierePro editors have no such luck; all current version CC updates will not open in older CC software (and certainly not CS 6 or 5.5); part of Adobe's planned obsolescence in forcing old version users to get on the CC subscription plan.
Best,
