I'm sure the maximum files for an mxf folder is 5000.  After 5000 Avid *should* make a new subfolder.  We try and keep ours to around 3-4000 max.  I'd split all those mxf's in to new numbered folders and rescan the databases on all of them.

that's conservative.
I would say that 22K is about the max. Go over about 30K and you won't be able to normally open the folder at OS level.

I would stay below 5,000 files in any MXF subfolder.

However, my preferred workflow generally results in far fewer mediafiles in any folder as I segregate media by source and rename folders thus locking them and preventing any size increases.  YMMV.

I am manually rejiggering a project from an EditShare system to work on
local drives.

Some of the Editshare folders have as many as 22k items in them.

Should those be broken down into smaller folders? And if so, what is the
right maximum per folder?

Thanks for any advice.
