As I think about this more there is a difference between corrupt settings and incompatible settings. I have only had one instance of an incompatibility between Ver. 5.5 to 6 on the Grid settings. This is by no means indicative of a thorough test. I have occasions where I have had to reload my settings from my flash drive when things got wonky.

My dirty little secret is I never rebuild my settings and in 15 years on Avid I've only been bitten once. That had to do with grid settings for safe title etc... IIRC from Ver 5.5 to 6 the grid turned black and I could not make it white. Importing the grid setting from a new user in 6 to my grid settings alleviated the issue for me. Now I'm not advocating my user setting lazyness but it's just the on the edge kinda guy I am.
Joking aside you can bring in things like keyboard layouts into a new user to save some work. If you do it one aspect at a time you can find out where the issue is cropping up.
