Re: [Avid-L2] Avid MC 8.3.1 patch vs. full installer for Mac?

Okay guess who just reinstalled 8.3.1.347000?  Yeah me.  Ask me why, well I'll tell you.  After finishing my transcode and LUT test I decided to move on to my next job, hey it's only 2am why not.  I opened a project I had set up in 6.5.4 on my new 8.3.1 and all of a sudden the bins don't stay where I put them.  I made a new bin and when I close it and reopen it the bin is very small in the upper left corner of the left monitor.  WTF I trash the .avs file and the xml settings and still same response.

Next I go back to the transcoding project I've been working on the last three day and not noticed this issue.  The bins open where they have bin before the issue arose.  I move one of the existing bins close it and reopen and it's back where it started but at least no scrunched up left.  I make a new bin and it's doing the scrunching thing up left.

This is why I just reinstalled 8.3.1 from the full installer but still the problem persists.  In the back of my mind somebody mentioned this on the L2 and there was a work around that fixed the problem but that it might creep up again.  I'm going to do an L2 search but if anyone recognizes this issue I'd be grateful for any suggestions.  I'm on Mac OS 10.9.5 MacPro 12 core mid 2012 running MC 8.3.1 with symphony option and a dongle.

FYI - the Application Manager is not smart enough to look at your dongle and not tell you about software updates. So it simply polls (at a ridiculous rate of every 10 seconds) to see what version you have, and what is available. An entirely ignorable prompt if you keep up at all with this or any other editing software news group.

As far as the least significant digits in your software version - rest assured that for v8.3.1, there's only been one "version" of that. You can, as per the new normal, update to it via the Application Manager (patch) or via the Avid Download Center (full installer), but they are the same software.

When I looked at the Application Manager under Update Avid Media Composer it listed the Version as 8.3.1.34700 or some string of numbers after the one.  I took that to mean that was the new update for 8.3.1.  I do have support active but I haven't blasted my dongle past 8.3.x.  My understanding is 8.4 takes a new blast to the dongle so I'm surprised it's telling me there's an update given my current dongle status.  I'm attaching a screen grab.  My first guess was that app manager see' my patch update as different from the full installer version but that's just a guess.  I think this version number is the new one I would update to.  It's a little unintuitive to just hit update and have it try to update me to 8.4 with my unblasted dongle.  I think the interface should more clearly label what my current version is and what I would be updating to.  Perhaps that would happen as soon as I hit update but I'm not going to try that now.

There is an update: 8.4 (June 25)

If you don't want to install it, you don't have to, just ignore Application Manager.

Now that I jumped to Ver. 8.3 this week I first ran the mac patch installer for 8.3.1.  Atypically this was a patch for Mac and not a full installer.  It seemed to work just fine but I noticed last night the applications manager said there was an update.  Today I went and noticed a full installer for 8.3.1 for mac so I'm downloading that.  I would think given both the mac 8.3.1 patch and the full installer 8.3.1 are dated as Mar 6 2015 they would accomplish the same thing.  Applications manager doesn't seem to think so and tells me there's an update.  Is there any reason to uninstall my patched 8.3.1 which was added on top of 8.3, and install this full installer version of 8.3.1?  I'm not having any issues but curious given the same date for the patch and full installer I don't see why there was ever a "Patch" version for the mac.  I'm pretty sure back around July 10 2015 when I downloaded the 8.3.1 patch there was no full installer, I would have looked for it but perhaps I missed it.

So is it my failing memory or the Avid site that is in error on the release date of the patch and full installer?
