on the real quick. I get Excel list that have adjoining fields
FileName, In TC, Out TC.
I duplicate the FileName to a second column right next to it.
I save that file out as a Tab Delineated TXT file.
I open that file in Text Wrangler.
I show invisibles.
I make sure the last line has a return and that any extra spaces that the original logger may have added are removed (like around the TC or before the file name and stuff).
I open up an ALE file I exported from Media Composer in Text Wrangler.
In that ALE I made it so it only has 4 columns, Name, Tape, IN, OUT.
I copy the header info from it and paste it into my new TXT file in Text Wrangler.
I save that file.
I rename the extension from TXT to ALE.
Import into Media Composer.
Clips get made in bin.
String all the clips out into a sequence.
Make EDL.

Would that be similar to in word showing the formatting data, or whatever they call it to see their internal hidden characters that effect formatting of a document like a paragraph break etc....?
So the litmus test is to export an ALE and open it in Text Wrangler to see what is really there. Then do an export into Excel and export that and see what bad additional hidden stuff is in that and remove it.
After getting a successful round trip what happens if you then open the ale in Excel and make modifications and resave? Does it add back the unwanted invisible stuff?
