HI Terry,
For what it's worth, I attached a $300 39" UHD Seiki to my MacBook Pro. I connected it with the HDMI port. It immediately showed up in my display list and it works. I keep it at the same distance as my 27" iMac and I believe they have roughly the same amount of pixels per inch. There are some issues with the display including color problems that I have not been able to fix including going into maintenance mode and offset angle fluctuations in brightness and color. Having said that, it functions very well and my setup can easily play back DNxHR HQX - 4096x2016 footage. My Data is on a Thunderbolt 2.o Big 5 array, 30 TB striped Raid 5.
More importantly, to answer your two monitor question, you can have all the bins and timeline on the Seiki and play the video back full screen on the MacBook Pro. It's retina display also changes color and brightness off axis. The 4K image looks great on the retina display.
Best Wishes,
Paul Sulsky

Subject: [Avid-L2] MacPro or MacBook Pro?
Been an Avid user since early 90's. Storyteller, not so much into fx. Am contemplating setting up a small home studio on a Mac. (I also have access to an all PC multi-Avid shop an hour away.) Would like to know what anyone recommends to be able to edit comfortably at home and still take work back and forth.
I am used to a 2 monitor setup and a client monitor, but was wondering if I can get by with 1 monitor for bins and timeline and the other monitor always in full screen mode? Laptop or desktop Mac??
