I've done it all imaginable ways, Krone blocks, cable runs, patch bays, routing matrices but faced with building a new post house for myself 3 years ago I knew I'd rather drop a couple hundred bucks on converters next to the speakers than run lots of cable. Not least for the exact reason you mention, do I run 2, 4, 6, 8 cables and what about next year when 16 channel becomes a standard do I run 8 more or just buy a newer de-embedder? But the main decision maker for me was soldering XLRs or crimping BNCs...

I've loved embedded audio since i first saw it - even when DVEs used to strip the sound if somehow the signal got misrouted. Less cables is better cables, unlike pixels, bit depth, frame rate and screen size, where more is better.

I don't see the logic in de-embedders for studio setups if audio outputs are also available on your box.

less hardware is less trouble, less energy consumption, less heat, less worries about sync.

(And probably less installation costs. Don't forget that on a de-embedder you still need connectors, so you end up with more connectors than running some audio cables...)

OK, I have to correct myself here. 295 gets you a BMD box that extracts 8ch of AES. I had no idea that prices for solutions like that had dropped so much.

So, why even bother with 4 analog audio outs?
