I think the answer is simple: What was the value of the Avid Fusion plugin?
Fusion (pre-BMD) was able to sell more products. They established a beach head in an NLE that was used in many higher-end broadcast and theatrical projects. And for those that cared, they offered a professional replacement for Avid's dated and challenged effects module.
What's in it for the customer? Same thing as the Fusion plugin. "No round tripping". And yes, for my workflow, I would pay $1,000 to avoid that headache. Obviously, people are buying the Baselight plugin for the exact same reason.
