I think the answer is simple:  What was the value of the Avid Fusion plugin?  

That's not an answer, but a different question.
If Avid can provide a plugin for in-app grading (Fusion, Baselight), then works on conforming/roundtripping compatibility with another party, everyone can be catered for. Why would they work with BMD to compete with a similar solution they already have with FilmLight?
