without getting into it too deep (partly because I am not sure I can at this distance in time from when we used to use film mode) it has to do with the fact that the timebase is the same for video and potential audio in a 59.94 / 29.97 project and it is not in a 23.976. There are all sorts of potential gotchas when unlinking as a consequence that means MC looks out for you and attempts to stop you doing something destructive.
