I think the physical problems many of us experience after many years of editing are due to poor habits and poor ergonomics. It can vary from editor to editor. Sitting isn't a real issue in my case. I have worked on improving my posture and all the rooms I work in have high quality chairs. For me, it's the small movements of my head all day, back and forth between the video monitor, composer monitor and bin monitor. It's giving me the equivalent of carpal tunnel in my neck. Unfortunately, I have little to no control over the ergonomics of the rooms I work in (other than my own). Many of them were initially set up with older equipment (pre LCD monitors) and the current layout makes no sense (if it ever did).

I don't think it's pop science (something I'm suspect of, too). Here are a few of the articles about sitting & health that get sited regularly. Looks like the latest says some exercise can offset the negative effects of sitting. But the weight of current careful science doesn't appear too positive. Check them out.
