[Avid-L2] Motion Effects Editor and 5D slo mo question

I'm working in a 1080P 23.98 project. It's a feature doc that has been shot over a 6 year time frame.  Quite a bit of it is shot on a Canon 5D.  The DP has shot beautiful slo-mo shots at 48fps.  There is also a great deal of footage shot on a variety of other cameras including ex3, Arri Alxa, Sony F3 etc. All the footage has been brought in via AMA and then transcoded to DNXHD115.

My question is about the workflow I am using to deal with the slo-mo. If I transcode the 48fps footage to DNXHD 115 23.98 fps and put it in the timeline the motion effects editor will not "promote" so that I can use fluid motion.  However if I put the original AMA clip in the timeline I can use the motion effects editor to get gorgeous slo-mo.  Am I doing something wrong?  I am finding this whole thing very confusing.

Thanks for any advice from the "L".

Also, I tried searching for a good tutorial on the %D Slo Mo work flow and could not find one.  Any recommendations?
