I think this is the position for a lot of folks.
V8.0 was basically V7.0.4 but with the new subscription.
We expect to see the next version very soon and that will have some new features that folks will like and find useful. But there are some key features people are seeing as critical for the end of year jump on board for subscription.
I'd say they are:
The new playback engine for improved performance and 2K, 4K or RI support
Scripsync and Phrase find restored
Some key updates to Frameflex (rotate and ability to zoom out beyond 100%)
Updates to DMF to support frameflex and color transformation settings
Background render, save and exports
All that said I can't imagine many will throw away effectively $1000 of software for the cost of $299 for support.
I just hope Avid aren't gambling on that being the case and that they will gain an extra year to bring online the new features.
