Of course I could push this through a clean mixer.  That would give me level control.  

Exactly. But a mixer with 5.1 outs (or with enough bus outs to route 5.1 to), is rather big, and not necessarily as cheap as the Denon amp, let alone the monitor control boxes I referenced.

And I did mention that the Denon amp has built in audio delay options, right? You'll need audio delay if you use ANY modern video display, as they all have input lags. 6-channel audio delays can get expensive. One of the cheapest options is the Behringer Shark DP110, of which you then would need 6, plus cabling, etc. A mixer with a 6-channel on-board delay or a monitor controller plus a separate 6-channel delay are likely all going to be more expensive than the Denon pre-pro.
