I should add that a one year grace period for upgrading to V8 was mentioned. There was also discussion about the Avid Everywhere licensing scheme and if you are a freelance editor is it up to you or the Avid Central Facility to have a seat license for you. It seemed like it was up to the facility to handle it but there was a question of how a floating license might play into this scenario. It seems like they are still working out the specifics of what seems to be a potentially confusing architecture for the remote clients. I didn't get a clear understanding of what I might want to invest in to keep myself viable for the remote work. I'm pretty sure if I picked up an ISIS Interplay for my home I'd be in good shape for the future but that might be a hard sell to the wife. I did see some legitimate interest by a network that had run out of office space and was looking at the Avid Everywhere scheme to be a way of adding edit bays without adding real estate.
I couldn't help watching the Pro Tools Everywhere demo thinking that the demo of a composer in LA, a guitar player in London and a mixer in Germany (IIRC) was interesting but didn't seem realistic because none of the contributors were in India. To be less snarky it was impressive technology but in my mind the idea of the composer doing the basic mix and then sending it off to a mixer and then getting it back with added bells and whistles seems like a great way to steal the mixers "special sauce" and then re purpose it on other projects. Kinda like giving away your ADO disk or your effects bin in the video world. They did mention frozen tracks as a way to bake things in that couldn't be altered by the recipient but they also mentioned unfreezing tracks at the receiving end so I don't quite know how that would work if you wanted to not give away a trade secret/technique.

Also if I understood correctly as long as you are not on Express DV or Avid meridian the upgrade to V8 will be the same price without the more recent trend of costing more if you have an older version. I sent my original post to marianna for clarification and I'll post it here when I hear from her. Or maybe she can just post here and skip my mandatory dog and OKI dog tangents. ;-)
