The fact that it does not lock up in safe mode indicates it might be related to a kernel extension (kext), since no third party kexts load in safe mode. You say you reloaded the OS recently,,.did you remember to make sure to reload the OS appropriate drivers for whatever hardware you have connected?
You could also try to create a new user account on the computer and migrate your data to the new account.
