[Avid-L2] Re: Now is the time for Avid Media Composer 7

I have avoided posting a link to my $10 eBook because of the many books and courses being offered by professional Media Composer editors. I've reviewed almost every release of MC from the mid-90`s onward. To me, MC was always too complicated to learn and was not compatible with the mouse-driven approached that is used by all my other Office and Apple software. I was happy with FCP -- until Apple replaced it with FCP X. I knew I had to switch -- and wasn't really convinced I wanted to go to Premier Pro. Having started with tape-based editing -- I did not find FCP X an attractive alternative. (I do, however, use it for simple jobs.) I found myself drawn to MC.

So I set out to write a document that does two things: it uses MC's Toolbars to support mouse-driven editing and it teaches one to use one's general editing skills that every FCP and Premiere user knows. Each task an editor needs to do is presented (e.g., video insert) and only one-way to do something is presented. Each editing goal avoids getting into explanations of "segments" and the "model" interface. (The addition of Smart Tools made this possible.)

Bottom-line, it doesn't teach Avid editing. Existing MC editors will hate my approach. Rather, it teaches how to edit on a MC 6 and 6.5. It has no tape stuff and assumes folks only have solid-state media and will export files. For those frustrated by FCP X's approach to CCing -- it has a chapter just on MC CC. (I haven't the time to update for V7.)

In short, as I learned to do tasks on MC, I wrote down what I did. Then I reviewed and rewrote many times. ( Marianna was wonderful in helping me through this process.)

Curious? Try this link:  http://www.scribd.com/DVCeBooks and look for "Switcher's Quick Guide to Media Composer V6." (You can read a portion of it free.)
