The images are taken away by NEC and sent to Japan where the pixels are recycled into paintbox paint.
Dead pixel rights are a bit of a hot topic right now with the demand for pixels escalating beyond worldwide production capability with the introduction of 4k. In fact some Pantone numbers are already discontinued in many paint systems due to short supply though I hear Adobe has a secret deal to harvest unclaimed images in the cloud and it's well known that Quantel has been hoarding stencil red for decades.
I think we will see a huge leap in the number of 'illegal colours' once saturation rationing kicks in and as we've seen lately the leading designers and colorists have been more economical with colour use of late using a lot less primaries and even grading live shoots down fur a desaturated look. As David Icke points out all that spare saturation goes somewhere... Open your eyes people - pixel saturation theft is everywhere! Even apple is in on the game just look at any h264 you make compared to the original...
