How we have it set up with the 6 partitions is shown below.
EDIT 1
EDIT 2
EDIT 3
MEDIA BACKUP 1
MEDIA BACKUP 2
MEDIA BACKUP 3
All of the Avid Media Files live in the EDIT partitions. The Project Files live in the MEDIA BACKUP partitions as well as all of the elements associated with the projects (raw footage, music, etc…)
This is how it was set up when I started here. I believe they do it to keep all of the avids running smooth when they are all being used.

I believe there's a way to dynamically resize 'drives' (partitions, actually,) but that didn't work correctly for us when it was first added to the software, so we've never tried it since. (Typical producer mentality, right? I never think of myself that way, and yet, there's the evidence, right there...) Because it's raid 5, even though it's not Avid-recommended, we also put the project folder on the terrablock media drive.
>>
>> Anyway, when a project / episode is finished, we archive the entire virtual drive to spinning media and LTO (which facilis can manage for you, but we don't use that part of their software.) For episodic stuff, if we're also doing the offline, then we keep a 'show generic' partition that also includes all the graphics, open, regularly used stuff - so that we can archive an episode before the entire season is complete. You have to be careful about not cross-colateralizing your materials if you use our strategy.
>>
>> Facilis has customized a lot of different work flows for a lot of different companies - definitely get them to pitch you. There's a way you can get two full systems that mirror each other - or, if you need crazy 4-k speed, you can create a partition - virtual drive - stripped across all 24 spindles (or 48 spindles if you have two systems!!)
