To answer your earlier question - yes you CAN make a file invisible by just putting a . in front of the name.
If you try to do it in the Finder - it should try to stop you. However, if you are fluent in the terminal, you can rename files to make them invisible (to the Finder) just by adding a '.' to the front of their name. Those files are still there, and still take up room, and are even still visible in terminal, (use ls -a to list 'all' files then you will see them) but are invisible in the Finder.
It is nice that you found a whopper of a useless file that was safe to delete. :) I agree with Mike that it was most likely an export that crashed on you.
