Shelf life had better be several years. We just upgraded hardware and
software less than two years ago.
I don't see moving off of DS for a long time. For what we do (agency
in-house, a lot of corporate work) it's a perfect Swiss Army knife of
functionality. Media Composer is a plug-in for me - a way to use AMA to
prep and transcode media, then I do everything in DS. It's a superb editor
(missing multicam, though) and having compositing, CC, paint (the Graphics
function is indispensible in a grading session), real titling, and even
clunky Marquee at my fingertips is ideal for what we do on a daily basis.
There are plenty of small shops who've built their world around DS and
we'll be fine for the foreseeable future. But we will have to make some
critical decisions soon enough.
