Not necessarily, true. But the bottom line is that if I send someone an H264, using Apple's H264 codec, I have no control over the way it is being displayed on the receiving end.

Sure, but how much control do we get over those flags? Close to zero. Which is one of the reasons that it's not a professional format, IMHO. Preferably both the creating party and the receiving party of any file should easily be able to set or tell what the file's gamma and levels are, and how they are set to be displayed.

I'd love to see the Belle Nuit testchart making it through H264 transparently.
