Mac Pro 2,1 Octo-core released in 2007, also has 32 bit EFI. Cannot run
Mountain Lion without turning your genuine Mac into a Hackintosh with
Chameleon.
In OSX Snow Leopard and Lion, 64 bit apps will run as genuine 64 bit,
addressing all memory even if you boot with the 32 bit kernel. This is
different than Windows. MacOSX itself can run in 32 bit mode, but the apps
can still run 64 bit. You can check this in Activity Monitor. 64 bit apps
will show that they are indeed running in 64 bit mode. Mountain Lion has
no 32 bit kernel and is therefore not supported on the Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1.
Last updates of Snow Leopard, all builds of Lion and Mountain Lion boot the
64 bit kernel by default if the hardware supports it. Early builds of Snow
Leopard and earlier OS versions may need to turn on 64 bit booting in the
terminal or supplied Avid utility.
Kernel Extension (aka drivers) must support 64 bit if you boot the 64 bit
kernel. If not, they won't load. Same goes for 32 bit kernel support. If
there is no support for 32 bit mode, it won't load when booting the 32 bit
kernel (Lion and earlier). This affected Avid DX hardware. The kernel
extension for DX hardware that came with Avid v6 did not support the 32 bit
kernel, therefore would not load if you booted the 32 bit kernel, even
though MC 6 would run just fine as a 64 bit app. You can run Avid MC 6 on
the Mac Pro 1,1 and 2,1, even though the machine boots the 32 bit kernel.
You can't run DX hardware, but third party cards like AJA and BMD work
just fine because their drivers are written for both the 32 and 64 bit
kernels.
