Resolution independence has been discussed and looks to be an option in the future so a new playback engine would likely be needed. Already having a very nice one in Protools would seem to suggest it as an obvious choice.
I just hope the drive for resolution independence isn't done at the cost of realtime playback performance.
I don't want to have my Avids spend as much time rendering as my other systems!
