Absolutely the ACE challenged the CMX... Ampex sales guru Keith Pierce
OWNED asia, I doubt anyone anywhere ever sold as many edit suites as Keith,
virtually every analogue edit suite from Hong Kong to Kuala Lumpur was an
Ampex turnkey installation, with VPR3s and 6s, Ace 200, Century 310, ADO,
Ampex caption cameras, Scribe (ok thats Chyron) and even Ava 3s! Heck we
even had Ampex Picturemaker 3d systems (badge engineered Cubicomps) so well
respected was Keith and Ampex. If it had an Ampex badge in Asia people
would buy it. They even sold some Alex capgens but that was much later.

The only CMX I ever saw in Asia was mine at APV. Almost every suite was a
clone with Ampex style cabinets and desks, same 19" 3 x monochrome preview
monitors and those horrible Barco CVS monitors that you had to run at 200%
contrast to look good which made the power supplies blow up with monotonous
regularity.

The only thing that stopped the Ampex march was the Quantel Harry. Once we
started down the Harry/D1 path Ampex was done.

In the UK the big challenge to CMX was the Sony 5000 then more so the 9000.
This was primarily fuelled by Sony packaging BVH2000s and an edit
controller for the same price as 3 x 1" decks.

But in truth CMX's downfall was due mostly to them being too reliable. Once
you bought one you didn't ever need to buy another. Its the Avid 7.1
syndrome. Sell a ton on launch then once everyone who wants one has one you
struggle for new sales for quite a while.

As for the ACE feature set, TBC remote years before remotes became common,
ILC triggers to the switcher and timeline control of ADO, best tagging of
any system and best of all for me as an effects guy, being able to just
keep adding transitions and effects in a single event with full store and
recall. I loved the ACE for commercials but preferred the CMX for shows and
long form. But regardless I will always be at heart a CMX editor... and I
still got an Omni in my spare bedroom...
