Start with these Nolo articles:
• Before You Apply for a Patent
Before you file a patent application, think about whether your invention merits the hefty patent filing fees.
• The Patent Application Process
Got a great invention? Learn the basics about patent searching, and about filing a patent application or a provisional patent application.
• Inventions and Profits
After you obtain a patent, a bigger challenge looms: How do you profit from your patented innovation? Here are the basics.
You can find those articles, and a whole bunch more here:

Nolo's stuff written by lawyers but for a general audience. They seem to say neither "don't worry...you can do EVERYTHING yourself" no "you better have a lawyer do EVERYTHING." Good and useful stuff.

Anybody got experience and or suggestions for where to go with a great device that should put me on easy street. ;-) Yeah and I plan to win the lotto too.
