When you get the Access error, is that if you try to reinstall the codecs? On a a Mac it's fairly easy to manually remove and add the codecs. I think they are at Mac HD>Library>Quicktime. The simplest solution might be a full uninstall and reinstall of Media Composoer - that will get you back to your starting point (but do uninstall first).
